Erynn choked and started coughing hard enough that her eyes watered. Kat sprayed the contents of her mouth all over the table. Avery, the traitor, stood and offered a hand over both of their heads.

Gaining control over her spastic coughing, Erynn heard Avery greet Grant and his date.

"Glad you made it, mate. Now who is this vision in silver?" He took her slender hand in his before lifting it to his lips.

Bastard.

"Thank you for inviting us. I'm Liz, Grant's girlfriend." She beamed.

Erynn's eyes flashed to Grant's and narrowed. He stared back at her with his bullshit innocent look on his face. Yeah, right. How had he described her the night she arrived? Someone he sees?

Liar!

"Liz, this is my lady Erynn and our friend Kat." Avery slid out a chair and gestured. Liz gracefully took the offered seat and laid her clutch on a dry section of the table. Marley unobtrusively stepped in to restore order. She stepped away as quickly as she came without a word, and the five of them were left in an awkward silence. Hard to do in a club full of laughing, smiling people and loud, throbbing music.

Kat cleared her throat. "Sorry for what I said before."

"Don't worry about it. It's forgotten."

Erynn snorted. Grant pierced her with a sharp glance while Liz furrowed her brow, glancing between them. She busied herself by running her hands through the short hair at Grant's nape. Jealousy churned in Erynn's gut.

Erynn spied a male server weaving between patrons toward their table with a variety of colorful shots. Erynn waved him over, desperate to numb the mass of mixed feelings consuming her. She’d spent the week in some sort of sexual tug of war with no clear winner at the end. Her excitement for the night out had fizzled out the second Grant's voice grated over her frayed nerves.

She snatched two drinks off the tray, not so much caring what they were, dropped a twenty, and downed one right after the other. The fruity liquid slid down smoothly, unlike the shots at the bar. When she turned back, Kat trailed Jack, who led her to the dance floor, and Liz's tongue was doing some sort of dance in Grant's mouth. Erynn broke away from the painful display to meet Avery's sympathetic glance. He stood, pushed in his chair, and wrapped a warm arm around her, settling his strong fingers low on her belly. His silent support was a calming balm to her hurt, but not enough to erase the image of Grant kissing another woman.

Avery bent low to whisper in her ear, "It's okay, love. I've got you. Dance with me."

She closed her eyes, prayed for strength, and nodded. When she opened her eyes, Grant stared at Avery's hand, rubbing back and forth on her abdomen. His jaw flexed and his mouth turned down. A quick glance at Liz confirmed she recognized Grant's interest in how Avery touched her. Not her problem, but she pitied her all the same.

Avery led her into a snug spot toward the center of the dance floor, where Erynn let him have it.
